Palermo

Palermo is an ancient city with a history going back to 734 BC. Founded by Phoenicians, Palermo was ruled by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Germanic tribes, Arabs, reconquered by the Normans, and became part of the kingdoms of Aragon, Savoy, Spain, and Austria. All of these influences have left their marks on Palermo and make it a fascinating place to visit.

It is not a "pretty" city because of many ruined and neglected buildings, rough edges, and horrible traffic. It is a poor city and it shows. However, there are still many good reasons to explore the city. Mosaics in the Cappella Palatina will take your breath away. So will the mumified corpses in the Capuchin catacombs. The marionette museum is a good place to wander and usually populated by only a few guests and the actors.

Pace yourself and take a cat nap when needed.
